Building the document
Important!

Before launching Quark Xpress you should first remove OPI Xtension (OPI.xnt) from the / Hard Drive / Applications / Quark 6 / Xtensions / folder. It can be deleted or moved to the / Hard Drive / Applications / Quark 6 / Xtensions disabled / folder.

Page files must be set up to the trim size of the publication.

The example shown is for a publication with a final trim size of 8.125" X 10.875"

All images and elements that bleed should be extended at least 1/8" (.125").

All colors that are used in the document that are NOT running as spot colors on press must be set to CMYK by changing the Color Mode to CMYK.

All colors that are used in the document that ARE running as spot colors on press must be setup as Color Mode to Spot Color.

All colors that are not used in the document should be deleted from the color palette.

Mac Quark 6 - Setting up a Print Style:

A Quark Print Style is a capture of all of the settings you would normally enter manually in the Print Dialog menu. By taking the time now to set up a Print Style it will allow you to quickly produce consistent output every time.

To set this up you will next download a Print Style template and customize it to your own specifications.

Note: Before setting up a print preset be sure to install the Prinergy Refiner ppd file. See the Getting Started

Step 1

Download the following Print Style Templates.

  • Launch Quark 6
  • Under the Edit menu select Print Styles...

In the Print Styles widow:

  • Click Import

  • Locate the Quark 6 Print Style Template that you downloaded in Step 1
  • Click Open

In the Print Styles widow:

  • Highlight the Quark 6 Print Style Template
  • Click Edit

On the Setup Tab of the Edit Print Style Widow

  • Set the Paper Width to 1" larger than the trim width of your publication.
  • Set the Paper Height to 1" larger than the trim width of your publication.
  • Rename your Print Style so that it can be identified
  • Click OK

In our example we used a had a final trim size of 8.125" x 10.875". We set our Paper Width to 9.125" and our Paper Height to 11.875". We then named our Print Style RRD 8.125 x 10.875. Repeat the process if you have multiple titles with varied trim sizes.

Step 7

In the Print Styles widow:

  • Click Save

  • Open your document
  • Choose File > Print (⌘ P)

In the Print Layout window.

  • Choose the Print Style you configured from the drop down menu at the top. It will load the predefined settings
  • In the Pages form enter in the page number that you wish to make into a PDF. NOTE: Create SINGLE page PDF's for submitting to the DSC.
  • You should verify the settings in each tab to make sure the settings match the settings you set up in the Print Style.
  • Make sure the desired layers are turned on.

  • Click Printer in the bottom right of the window.

In the Print window OS X 10.4 users (Shown)

  • Click the PDF drop down menu in the bottom left of the window.
  • Choose Save PDF as PostScript...

OS X 10.3x users (Not Shown)

  • Under the Copies & Pages pull down menu...:Select Output Options.
  • Select Save as File...
  • Set the Format to PostScript.

Save dialog box

  • Name the PostScript file using the convention of 3 digits for the folio number, an underscore, and an abbreviation for the job title, followed by .ps. Example: page 1 of job number 9512345 is named 001_9512345.ps.
  • Cover page folios can be named FC, IFC, IBC and BC for Front Cover, Inside Front Cover, Inside Back Cover and back Cover respectively. Example: The front cover of job number 9512345 would be named fc_9512345.ps (See the File Naming Guidelines document for more detailed info)
  • If you are using a Distiller Watched folder, select the In folder as the destination for the saved postscript file.
  • Click Save
Step 5
  • Click Print.
  • Distiller will automatically process your postscript file and produce a PDF with RRD settings. Note: Make sure Distiller is running
  • Open your PDF and preview to ensure that is accurate before uploading it to InSite.
