Configure Layout Application:

Page files must be set up to the trim size of the publication.

The example shown is for a publication with a final trim size of 8.125" X 10.875"

All images and elements that bleed should be extended at least 1/8" (.125").

All colors that are used in the document that are NOT running as spot colors on press must be set to CMYK by changing the Color Mode to CMYK.

All colors that are used in the document that ARE running as spot colors on press must be setup as Color Mode to Spot Color.

All colors that are not used in the document should be deleted from the color palette.

Mac InDesign CS - Setting up a Print Preset:

An InDesign Print Preset is a capture of all of the settings you would normally enter manually in the Print Dialog menu. By taking the time now to set up a Print Preset it will allow you to quickly produce consistent output every time.

To set this up you will next download a preset template and customize it to your own specifications.

Note: Before setting up a print preset be sure to install the Prinergy Refiner ppd file. See the Getting Started

Step 1

Under the File menu select Print Preset Define

Select New

Step 3

General Tab

  • Name the Print Preset
    (in this case we named it RRD)
  • Set the Printer to: PostScript File
  • Set the PPD to: Prinergy Refiner

Setup tab

  • Set the Paper Width and Height to 1 inch larger than the final trim size of the publication. The example shown is for a publication with a final trim size of 8.125" X 10.875"
  • Set the rest of the settings as shown

Marks and Bleeds Tab

  • Turn on Crop, Bleed and Registration marks.
  • Set the offset to 12 pt (.1667 in).
  • Set the Bleed to .125" on the Top, Bottom, Left & Right

Output tab

  • Set the Color to Composite CMYK
  • Set the rest of the tab as shown.

Graphics tab

  • Set Images: Send Data to All
  • Set Fonts Download to Complete and check Download PPD Fonts
  • Set PostScript to Level 3
  • Set Data Format to Binary

Color Management tab

  • Set the tab as shown
  • Note: InDesign Color Management should be turned off. (Under the Edit menu select Color Settings and uncheck Color Management)

Advanced tab

  • Turn on OPI Image Replacement (If you are not using AdSpring you can turn it off)
  • Set the Transparency Flattener to High Resolution

Summary tab

  • Verify the settings that you made.
  • Click OK

Save the Preset

  • Click OK to save the Print Preset

Mac InDesign CS - Writing a PostScript file:

Step 1
  • Open the document that you wish to print and select Print From the File menu
  • Select the page you wish to write to a postscript file NOTE: Write only single page postscript files.
  • Now that you have a Print Preset defined you can select that preset from the print menu and it will load the predefined settings for all the print dialog tabs
  • You should verify the settings in each tab to make sure the settings match the settings you set up in the print preset.
  • Click Save

  • If you are using a Distiller Watched folder, select the In folder as the destination for the saved postscript file.
  • Select Save
  • Distiller will automatically process your postscript file and produce a PDF with RRD settings
  • Open your PDF and preview to ensure that is accurate before uploading it to RRD Insite
